Custom Geocoins

That's the beginning of an image we plan to use for our Zen Bassmasters Custom Geocoin. We've been looking at prices online and, so far, it's been pretty darn expensive, not to mention the fact that we'd then have 100 geocoins.

So my questions, gentle readers, are these.

1. Does anyone recommend any specific companies for custom geocoins. We're looking for good value, good workmanship, and trackability through geocaching.com

2. Do you recommend any certain type of geocoin over another?

3. If we tried to sell some of our extras, what is the market like for custom coins? What's the general going rate for them and what sites are out there to either sell them through or find out information about selling them?

The gc geocoin forum is a wealth of info on this subject. Permanent links at the top of the forum. If it is a trackable coin, that is an extra $1.50 per coin to gc, you would have to check the minimum number of tracking numbers that you can purchase, it was 500 at one time and where the min is for a unique icon. The coin itself will run $5 ea to as much as you want to spend based on the features you choose. Selling them is hit or miss based on the design and current trends, right now there are plenty of collectors looking for nice coins, what's nice to you may not be nice to them. Something themed to caching, state coins, and personal coins still seem to do ok. One idea is to check the coin producers, there is an option now where you design the item and IF they like it(consider it marketable) they sell it through there site, with a bit of profit going to them. The benefit is no: post office trips, buying mailers and labels, numerous emails, setting up an ordering acct, keeping up with tracking numbers, etc. There is a lot of work that goes into the behind the scenes that just starts with the first design going through the proofing process. The gc forums are a preferred sale area. It is best to have the coins in hand prior to sale, there is a bit of a history with shipping delays and angry masses not being kept informed. However, presales to front the coin costs still occur, just keep updates with good communication!! eBay seems to be the after market spot but frowned upon for intial sales.
Geonickels are wooden tokens and run under a $1 ea to produce, gc tracking still costs the $1.50 ea. if offered on the tokens. Set up fees are around $30-75 and you can reorder in small quantities.

I've enjoyed your blog, just getting to the one about abn1's hometown, Winchester, looking forward to reading it! There are a few minters that offer trackable geocoins, I'll give you one here in NC, coinsandpins.com, I am not sure of their rates but they do quality work and are trackable!!

Love the blog,

Another good place to look at for your coin is www.geocoinstore.com. They just did a coin for someone in our area and it was a run of like 300 - the coins sold for $6.50 each and are trackable on GC.com.

You all are like celebrities, I would buy a couple of your coins.

Many institutions limit access to their online information. Making this information available will be an asset to all.
